The method know as 3d ultrasound scanning is used during early pregnancy, it provides 3d images of the unborn baby. Most times these ultrasound samples are rapidly collected and joined together and made into a movie to created a 4d ultrasound scan.
Three dimensional scans works in a similar manner to the traditional ultrasound except that the ultrasound waves can be sent from multiple directions.
