Awards Don’t Have to Be Trophies

Filed under: Education Special, Feathers, Sports — admin at 2:48 pm on Tuesday, September 30, 2008

There are many awards available that are not trophies. In fact, many companies such as Gordon International allow for custom awards to be designed and cast in a variety of forms and fashions. Awards can be trophies, silver or gold cups, or medallions. You can even offer awards in the form of chenille emblems that can be added and displayed on a letterman jacket.

Unlike many elementary schools and community teams today, I do not believe that every participant should receive the same award. In fact, most high schools do not follow this philosophy either. Still, it is important that awards be given to all students who showed excellence in their field. This can be showing excellence in their role on the sports or academic team, whether the team won any championships or not. It can also be given to show excellence for winning district contests such as often happens in choir, band, forensics, and debate.

One of the best ways to give awards, I think, is in chenille. This is because the awards are displayed on a letterman jacket for all to see. Medallions can be lost in moves between home and university, and trophies may be placed in a box for keepsakes and never displayed or shared at all until years after the fact. When the awards are placed on letterman jackets they are enjoyed and admired by all.

Testing For Allergies

Filed under: Life Of Templates — admin at 8:31 pm on Friday, September 26, 2008

Allergy Tests

Allergy tests are simple, quick, and relatively painless. And they’re the best way to confirm whether or not a particular allergen (or allergens) will cause a person to have an allergic reaction. Typically a person will suspect that he or she is allergic to something before taking an allergy test, so often an allergy test is performed as a way to confirm a suspicion. Skin tests and blood tests are the most common types of allergy tests performed today.

Once the problem-causing allergen is singled out, that person can then make the necessary modifications in his/her environment and/or lifestyle to protect against an allergic outbreak. This is important because allergic reactions can range from a simple irritating skin outbreak all the way to serious difficulty with breathing.

Skin Allergy Tests

In most situations, a skin test will be performed first as it usually results in reliable findings. Plus, skin tests for allergies are faster and less expensive than blood tests. With skin tests, several allergens can be tested simultaneously. The person administering the test begins by cleaning the test area, either the back or the arm, with alcohol. Next, a liquid form of the allergen is rubbed on the skin. If more than one allergen will be included in the test, each will be spread 1 - 2 inches apart. The location of each allergen likely will also be labeled.

Next either a needle (single prick) or an instrument with between 5 to 10 pricks on it is used to break the surface of the skin which causes the allergen solution to get into the skin. If a reaction is going to occur, a raised, red, blotchy mark will usually appear within 10 to 15 minutes. The medical term for this appearance is a wheal and its appearance means that the person has had a positive reaction to the allergen.

Sometimes if the test for an allergen is negative, another skin test called an intradermal test is performed. This is where the allergen is actually injected with a needle deep in the skin. Again, if a wheal develops, that is considered a positive reaction. A skin patch works off the same premise. A patch that is soaked with an allergen is applied to the skin for about 2 days. The problem with the patch is that it will come off in the water or sometimes from excessive sweat, so bathing and exercising are advised against while the allergy tests are in process.

Blood Allergy Tests

Blood tests require a sample of blood to be extracted from the person’s vein. The collected blood gets sent to a laboratory where it is tested for the presence of allergen antibodies.

There is much debate as to whether or not one type of allergy test is better than another. When in doubt, as with any potential medical condition, it is always best to seek another opinion or get another test. A decision about treatment should be made only after discussing a person’s test results and history of symptoms with a trained medical professional.

Time Warner\’s Steve Ross

Time Warner’s Steve Ross

Time Warner is closely associated with Hollywood and has produced myriad movies and television shows. Throughout its existence, many people, be they employees or clients, have acknowledged its stature as the second largest of the leading media and entertainment companies in the world, just behind News Corporation. Time Warner though, would have not come into reality if not for the man who was behind its helm: Steven J. Ross.

Steven Jay Rechnitz, later known as Steve Ross, was born on September 17, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to Jewish immigrants. Steve’s father replaced the name Rechnitz with Ross in 1932. In 1945, Steve was enlisted in the U.S Navy but only spent seven days at sea and never served in combat. Despite his military record, Ross claimed that his hearing loss was due to his participation in battles. After the war, he went to study at Paul Smith’s College.

Ross married Carol Rosenthal in 1954. Rosenthal’s father owned the Kinney Parking Company, which four years later, expanded under Ross’ leadership. The former funeral parlor enterprise boomed into a media venture. After a series of buyouts and mergers, the Warner Communications was born in 1972 with Ross as its CEO. Three years before his death, Ross oversaw the merger that would make his company one of the biggest in the media and entertainment industry: Time Warner.

Ross is remembered by his peers and employees as an emotional boss rather than an intellectual one. Most of his corporate decisions were based on gut feeling and instincts rather than market trends and surveys. Ross was also a generous employer. He gave lavish salaries to all his employees, from the utility personnel to the stars. He justified that his generosity was just his way of providing incentives to his employees.

To learn more about Steven Ross, read his biography on the Business Biographies site.

Courtney Sale Ross, the wife of Steven Ross, was interviewed by Charlie Rose.

Courtney Sale Ross and Steve Ross founded the Ross School, an innovative educational institution that uses progressive models of learning.

Texas Holdem Rules - The Rounds

Filed under: Gambler Den — admin at 4:11 pm on Monday, September 22, 2008

To learn how to play holdem, you must first learn the texas holdem rules. Here are four basic terms:

The Pocket — This term refers to the two cards dealt face-down to each player at the beginning of a hand. The pocket cards are the first ones dealt, the only ones to be hidden, and the only ones that belong to the individual players. These are the cards that separate you from your opponents. Sometimes referred to as “the hole,” or “hole cards.”

The Flop — These are the first three community cards dealt out. According to texas holdem rules they are dealt together, face-up, usually after a single “burn” card is dealt face-down (these burn cards have nothing to do with the game, but discourage cheating). These cards will often give a good picture of whether you stand a chance of winning a hand.

The Turn — Another card dealt face-up, by itself. It is laid next to the three flop cards. A burn card is dealt first, face-down. The turn is also called “fourth street” by many players. It is the last card before…

The River — The climax of the hand. Once the single river card is laid down face-up next to the turn–after a burn card, of course, everyone still in the game knows exactly how strong their hand is. The river is sometimes referred to as “fifth street.”

Once these four dealing rounds are finished, texas holdem rules says each player will have a total of seven cards from which his hand will be made: the two cards in front of him, plus the five community cards in the middle. Here only cunning can change the outcome, and fortunes are lost and made.

But wait! What separates the above four dealing stages of the game? Betting rounds–and it is here that the game is won or lost.

Between each stage, and after the river, the players bet. In just a moment we’ll take a look at the Texas Holdem Rules governing betting, which vary depending on the limit, but first we’ll go over the basics.

There are four betting rounds in Texas holdem rules. The first round comes after the pocket cards are dealt. This is called the “pre-flop” round. Here the player bet on the two cards they have in their hands.

The second betting round comes after the three flop cards have been dealt. This round is called the “post-flop” or “(betting) on the flop.”

The third betting round comes after the turn card has been dealt, and is referred to as “(betting) on the turn.”

The fourth betting round comes after the river card has been dealt, and is known as “(betting) on the river” or the “last round.”

Each betting round must be complete before the next cards are dealt according to Texas Holdem Rules!

Money Management, Why You Need to Manage Your Bankroll

Filed under: Gambler Den — admin at 10:21 am on Monday, September 22, 2008

You should only play games that your bankroll will allow. If you have 200 dollars to play with for a month you don’t want to lose it all in the first week playing a 5-10 no-limit game. The average pot in these games would be about the size of your bankroll. You should play lower limit games that match your bankroll.

Minimize your losses. I have seen players loose a big hand, go on tilt and loose their whole bankroll in one night. If you ever get angry because of a bad beat or loose a lot of money quickly you should take a break. A lot of mental energy will be used up worrying about your bad luck, this will effect your game in a negative way. I recommend going for a walk or even quit playing for the day. There will always be another game tomorrow.

Protect your bankroll. Not every player needs a bankroll. If you only play on occasion with extra money you probably don’t need to worry about this. But if you are a player who wants to make a good income from poker your bankroll is an asset. Lets say you start with a bankroll of 500 dollars at a poker site. Now after a week of winning you are up to 2000 in your account. You take out 1500 and go buy a new TV. That is fine but if you get on a bad streak you can easily loose the 500 you still have. Then you will have no bankroll and wont be able to play. This happens to a lot of good player, and if they cant play they cant win anymore. This can put an end to your poker profits.

So just remember that poker is a game of swings. You can win a lot but you can also get on a bad luck streak and lose a lot. Just watch your bankroll, manage your money, and always leave yourself outs.

——Suggestion——-

Remember to think about your bankroll before each time you play. Think about what will happen if you loose all your money in your account. Will you want to deposit more money you cant afford to lose? Are the stakes of the game so high it you loose a big hand you will be out of chips? Just think before you start to play about the worst case scenario and you should have less bankroll problems.

How To Play Five Card Stud Poker

Filed under: Gambler Den — admin at 3:38 pm on Sunday, September 21, 2008

Five Card Stud is similar to Five Card Draw, the difference being that you do not ever get a chance to replace cards in your hand and therefore do not get a chance to improve that hand. As in Seven Card Stud you get a hole card and 4 open cards for all to see. Most versions play the final card as a community card. Since there is no chance to improve your hand, the winning hands tend to be either pairs or high cards and it is hard to string people along to the final street. Some variations on Five Card Stud alleviate this by making the last card a pocket card allowing for some raises.

The Open

The hand starts with the dealer handing each player 2 cards. First cards dealt are a hole card and then the dealer follows up with an open card for each player. Wagering then begins, usually with the high open card going first and then following clockwise. This continues until betting is over. These are the first two “Streets”.

Third Street

The dealer then hands out a third card, which is another open card. This is followed by another round of betting. Betting begins again with the highest open card opening and continues until there are no more bets made. Then it is time for the Fourth Street.

Fourth Street

Again the dealer hands out an open card, which is then followed by another round of betting. Betting again continues until all call and then it is on to the Fifth Street.

Fifth Street

The Fifth Street is the final card. Usually this is an open card but some variations play this as a hole or pocket card to make the game more interesting. This variation creates more uncertainty about which cards your opponent’s hole cards could be and allows for more interesting betting opportunities. Bluffs and more creative betting make this variation more interesting than four straight open cards.

Another variation is to have both the first and second cards remain hole cards, for much the same reasons as making the fifth card a hole card. The problem with having only the first card as a hole card is that even beginning players get a feel for the odds of any particular player having a better hand than theirs, based on their open cards. Therefore it is difficult to have an interesting hand of cards as betting tends to be rather a bit more conservative as a result.
