Upgrade Will Not Actually Double Speed, Confesses Vodafone

Vodafone has recently announced the introduction of newer and faster mobile broadband services for its customers. The company is offering 14.4Mbps speeds in certain areas of the UK.

Although only pockets in Birmingham, Liverpool and London will receive the faster services as of now, Vodafone said the new mobile broadband network would soon spread to other places. However, the speed of wireless broadband will actually rest on a number of issues (as it always does) including the distance of the user from the closest base station and the number of people using the network.

Vodafone had earlier been forced to admit that its advertised speed of 7.2Mbps was not actually what its users were getting, as they were generally restricted within the 1Mbps to 5Mbps range.

The company has again come out with the admission that the upgraded customers will continue to receive broadband speeds between 1Mbps to 5Mbps and that a speed of 10.8Mbps is what they can expect the most, as against the advertised 14.4Mbps. But Jeni Mundy, Vodafone UK’s chief technology officer, strongly claims that this upgrade is only a part of the company’s larger aim of providing customers better services and increasing its network.

This recent upgrade will also make Vodafone the first wireless broadband service provider in the UK to use the speedy HSDPA service.
